Introduction to Our New Blog
03/11/2008

Hi,

I'm Carol Boyle and I wrote Natural Food Recipes for Healthy Dogs. This book was meant to help dog lovers transition their dogs from commercially manufactured food to a more natural and whole foods diet.  I started the NaturalDogFood.com Web Site in 1996, at the same time my book was first published. The site and the book were designed to help take the fear out of feeding a home prepared diet, and to help other dog owners deal with the sometimes overwhelming prospect of revamping their dog's diet while still coping with all the other issues of a busy lifestyle.

I started feeding my dogs what I call Natural Foods in the mid 1980s. While I had a modest amount of support from my veterinarians, there were no text books or other information they could supply me. And of course no Internet. Armed only with a copy of Dr Pitcairn's book, I plunged in.

And I never looked back.

My hope is to make this transition easier for all the canine care-givers who want to prepare healthy meals for their dogs, and at the same time improve the way they eat as well.

I have chosen the blog format as the medium, since spammers have rendered much of our email useless. Even with the best of spam and virus checkers I still have to wade through hundreds of worthless emails daily to find the questions and comments from my readers. And all the wonderful photos.

To this end, I welcome your comments, and your photos. So for anything that is 'dog' or 'food', or 'dog food' related, please keep me posted on what's new in your life using this blog.

I love your site, and the pictures of Patou! I started my dogs on natural food about 7 years ago, and I remember reading your site then as I was educating myself. I just wanted to say that when we made the change, because of circumstances we made the change cold turkey, rather than weening them off/on, and had absolutely no diahrea or reaction from our 2 dogs, a Cocker and a Springer Spaniel; they totally thrived on it! Then we rescued/fostered 3 additional dogs (2 Samoyed mixes, and a Husky) in the years after that, and never had any problem starting them immediately on the food as well. The basic recipe I use is ground turkey, brown rice, canned green beans, canned yams, and eggs. And then each week I'd make different variations... throwing in fresh veggies, or whatever we had for dinner. Thanks for all your great insights!

Karen,
Thanks for the input on feeding your dogs a natural food diet. Most dogs do transition easily, and eagerly. I hope your experience will help encourage other dog owners to "take the plunge." The dogs really do love their new food and do so well on it as well. Any photos?
Carol
